AERO Statement on HB 1602 Progress in 2023 Session

AERO Executive Director Mike Boyd today released the following statement about HB 1602, the Oklahoma Electric Choice and Competition Act. HB 1602 was introduced in committee by Rep. Ryan Martinez (R-Edmond) but has not advanced out of committee.

“Our thanks go out to Rep. Ryan Martinez for being willing to introduce a serious policy proposal for restructuring Oklahoma’s electricity market by introducing choice and competition. The legislation he authored has the potential to lower electricity prices for all consumers and allow them to purchase electricity plans that are right for their businesses and families, as opposed to being held hostage by an increasingly expensive monopoly system. While it appears that bill will not advance this session, simply having the conversation about the status quo and how it might be reformed is a big step in the right direction.

“Throughout this legislative session, we have been encouraged by the thousands of Oklahomans who have offered their support for choice and competition and a desire to move on from monopolies. We will continue to be their voice until Oklahoma’s political leaders listen to the will of the people and pursue meaningful reform.” – Mike Boyd, executive director, AERO
